KAITLab

AI-Powered Mathematics Learning & Analytics Platform

KAITLab is an AI-powered mathematics learning and analytics platform that connects assessment, student work, automated grading, performance analysis, and personalized training within one learning ecosystem.

Students can complete assessments online or solve mathematics naturally on paper using smartpen technology, capturing not only their answers but the work and problem-solving process behind them. The system analyzes student performance and uses those insights to provide AI-driven training adapted to each student’s level.

The platform supports different experiences for students, teachers, school managers, and district leaders, giving each user access to the level of insight and action relevant to their role.

As Head of UX & Product Design, I lead the experience across this ecosystem, shaping the product architecture, workflows, interaction patterns, and design system as the platform continues to evolve.

The Challenge

KAITLab connects multiple stages of the mathematics learning journey: assessment, handwritten and digital student work, automated grading, performance analysis, and AI-driven personalized training.

The design challenge was to turn this complex system into one coherent experience while serving users with very different needs. A student needs to understand progress and what to work on next. A teacher needs to identify learning gaps and understand the work behind a student's result. School and district leaders need to recognize broader performance patterns across classes, schools, and student groups.

The experience also needed to connect different forms of learning evidence, from online assessments to mathematical work captured through smartpen and paper, without requiring users to understand the complexity of the technology behind it.

The challenge was to make a deep, data-rich system clear at every level while preserving the context needed to move from assessment to insight, and from insight to the right next learning action.

Strategic Approach

The product experience was designed around a connected learning cycle rather than a collection of separate dashboards: capture student work, analyze performance, understand the evidence, and turn those insights into the next learning action.

• Designed around distinct user roles: Created role-based experiences for students, teachers, school managers, and district leaders, ensuring each user sees the information, controls, and level of detail relevant to their responsibilities.

• Connected high-level signals to the underlying evidence: Structured the information architecture so educators can move from class or school performance into individual students, assessments, questions, and the actual mathematical work behind a result without losing context.

• Unified physical and digital assessment journeys: Designed the experience to accommodate both online assessments and smartpen-and-paper workflows within the same product ecosystem.

• Turned complex data into actionable insight: Prioritized learning patterns, performance signals, and areas that may require attention instead of presenting every available metric with equal importance.

• Connected assessment with personalized training: Created a continuous experience in which student performance and identified learning needs can inform AI-driven training tailored to each student's level.

• Built for an expanding product ecosystem: Established reusable interaction patterns, components, and design-system foundations across performance analytics, item analysis, student work, AI training, behavior, and other evolving product modules.

Product Impact

The work established a unified UX foundation for a complex mathematics learning ecosystem spanning assessment, automated analysis, student work, performance analytics, and personalized AI training.

A consistent product architecture now supports multiple user roles and levels of information, from an individual student's mathematical work to classroom, school, and district-level performance.

The experience also connects traditionally separate parts of the learning journey, including paper-based work, digital assessment, analysis, and training, within a coherent product model that can continue to scale as KAITLab introduces new capabilities and workflows.
